What is a fake profile?

A fake profile is an account with false photos or false information. Some just want attention, but many want money: in so-called romance scams, scammers fake a relationship and after a while ask for financial help. This matters especially in international dating, because meeting quickly is often not possible.

9 warning signs of fake profiles

1

He or she asks for money

For a ticket, surgery, customs fees or an emergency – often after just a few weeks of contact. This is the most important warning sign.

2

Gift cards or crypto

Requests for gift cards, Bitcoin or “a small transfer” are typical, because the money can hardly be recovered.

3

Quick switch to WhatsApp & co.

Anyone who wants to lure you off the platform onto a messenger right away avoids its safety features.

4

No video call

The camera is “broken”, the internet “too bad” – for weeks.

5

Big feelings after a few days

Declarations of love and plans for the future before you really know each other are meant to force trust.

6

Photos like from a magazine

Perfect profile pictures, hardly any everyday photos – often they are copied from strangers.

7

The story doesn’t add up

Age, home town or job change, answers stay vague or seem copied.

8

Job far away, no way back

A soldier on deployment, an engineer on an oil rig, a doctor with an aid organisation – a meeting is supposedly never possible.

9

“Invest with me”

Tips about crypto platforms or safe returns are a widespread scam that starts with love.

How to check a profile

  1. Reverse image search: upload a profile photo to Google Lens or TinEye. If it shows up under a different name, be careful.
  2. Suggest a video call: people who are real will happily show themselves on video sooner or later.
  3. Ask for details: specific questions about everyday life, their city or job expose memorised stories.
  4. Take your time: real feelings can survive a few weeks of patience.
  5. Talk to someone about it: friends or family often spot warning signs faster than you do.

Golden rules for safe online dating

  • Never send money to people you don’t know in person – not even gift cards or crypto.
  • Don’t share bank details, passwords or copies of your ID.
  • Don’t send intimate photos or videos to people you don’t know.
  • Meet in a public place the first time and tell someone you trust where you are.
  • When meeting abroad: book and pay for your own travel and accommodation.

What to do if you’ve been scammed

  1. Stop all contact immediately and make no further payments.
  2. Secure evidence: screenshots of the profile, chats and payment receipts.
  3. Report the profile – on Foundmylove and on every other platform where the person contacted you.
  4. Inform your bank if money was sent – sometimes a payment can still be stopped.
  5. Report it to the police in your country. The US Federal Trade Commission also explains what to know about romance scams.

And most importantly: it’s not your fault. Scammers work professionally and deliberately play with emotions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I spot a fake profile?

Typical warning signs are requests for money, gift cards or crypto, a quick switch to other messengers, avoiding video calls, very early declarations of love and photos that look too perfect. A reverse image search often shows whether the photos belong to someone else.

What is a romance scam?

A romance scam is fraud in which scammers use fake profiles to pretend to be in a relationship in order to take money from their victims.

What do I do if someone asks me for money?

Don’t send money – not even small amounts, gift cards or crypto. End contact, save the chat history and report the profile.

How do I report a profile on Foundmylove?

Open the profile and click “Report user”. Choose a reason, for example “Fake profile / false information” or “Fraud / requests for money”, and briefly describe what happened. We review every report.

Can I block a member?

Yes. Every member’s profile has a block function. This ends your contact with that person.

Is it normal to switch to WhatsApp quickly?

Many couples switch messengers at some point – but not after just a few messages. Take your time until you’ve seen each other on a video call.
